Omaha
is the largest city in Nebraska, located on the Missouri River in the east-central part of the state. The city of Council Bluffs, Iowa lies adjacent to Omaha across the Missouri River. As of the 2008 census, the population of Omaha was 432,921. This dynamic Midwestern city has been a tourist destination for many years. In the 1800s, it was home to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and in 1883, Omaha hosted the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, a world's fair that lasted for more than half the year. Omaha's historical and cultural attractions have been praised by several national newspapers, including the New York Times and the Boston Globe. It is home to the Joslyn Art Museum, Durham Museum and Holland Performing Arts Center, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, Opera Omaha and the Orpheum Theater. In addition, the Omaha Community Playhouse is the largest community theater in the country. The city also offers a Children's Museum and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, which is the largest urban artists' colony in the world. The Henry Doorly Zoo is considered one of the premier zoos in the nation and houses the world's largest indoor rainforest and the largest cat complex in North America. Other Omaha attractions include Sea World, the Omaha Botanical Gardens and the historic downtown area known as the Old Market. Several community parks are found in the city and part of Omaha's riverfront area contains the Heartland of America Park, which includes a marina and a 3,000-foot long footbridge crossing the Missouri River into Council Bluffs.

Northwestern Iowa has a four-season climate that is classified as humid continental. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September, with severe thunderstorms possible during this time. The northwest section of the state is somewhat drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches. Blizzards are possible in winter and tornadoes can occur during spring and summer. January and February are generally the coldest months, although late winter and early spring storms in March and April have been known to produce large amounts of snow. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumns are generally mild and pleasant.
