Nebraska-City
is a town of about 7,000, located in Otoe County in the southeast corner of the state. Although small, it offers a wide variety of things to see and do. The town is well known for two special annual events: Arbor Day Celebration. a three day festival devoted to the tree-planting event, and the AppleJack Festival, which was ranked as one of the "Top 10 Fall Festivals in North America" in 2006 by the Society of American Travel Writers. In addition, Nebraska City is home to several fine museums, including the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum, which includes a 52-room neocolonial mansion that sits on 72 lush, wooded acres that once belonged to J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day and former Secretary of Agriculture. The Mayhew Cabin and Historical Village in Nebraska City is the only site in the state on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Interpretive Trail & Visitor Center is a hands-on museum with over 300 exhibits, and other museums include the Old Freighters Museums and the River Country Nature Center. For outdoor recreation, the Steamboat Trace Trail is a 21-mile hiking and biking trail that runs along the Missouri River. Nebraska City is also home to 3 golf courses.

Eastern Nebraska has seasonal weather variations can be drastic at times. As in many other areas of the Midwest, summer can bring severe thunderstorms, hailstorms and tornadoes. When not stormy, summer days are hot and humid. Winters are cold, and the area gets snow, although very heavy snowfall is uncommon. Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. Although located at approximately the same latitude as Rome, this region with its location near the center of North America, and far from large bodies of water or mountain ranges, has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters.
