Bellevue
is the third-largest city in Nebraska, with a population of approximately 48,000 residents. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area and is the oldest city in Nebraska. Bellevue began as a fur trading post established by the Missouri Fur Company in 1822. However, in spite of its initial growth, the town nearly disappeared by 1839. With a nearly ideal location on the Missouri River with access to the Platte River, Bellevue was soon reborn and became a hub for transfer of manufactured goods from the East Coast to the West. Bellevue prospered in the 1840s and 1850s, but during the second half of the century, Bellevue again slipped into relative obscurity. It was the building of Fort Crook, later named the Offutt Air Force Base and home to the huge Martin bomber plant during World War II, that spurred Bellevue's largest growth. Later, the first divided highway in Nebraska history was built from the south Omaha city limits to Offutt Air Force Base. It is todays Fort Crook Road and was finished December 8, 1941, the day after the Pearl Harbor attacks. Today, the city of Bellevue is a wonderful mix of small home town and big-city amenities. Attractions include several historic sites, including an 1830s log cabin and 1856 Pioneer Cemetery, the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center, Lewis and Clark Children's Interpretive Wall, a historical museum, theater and water resort.

Northwestern Iowa has a four-season climate that is classified as humid continental. Nearly three-fourths of the annual precipitation is received April through September, with severe thunderstorms possible during this time. The northwest section of the state is somewhat drier in summer and colder in the winter than the southern regions. Seasonal snowfall statewide is 32 inches. Blizzards are possible in winter and tornadoes can occur during spring and summer. January and February are generally the coldest months, although late winter and early spring storms in March and April have been known to produce large amounts of snow. Hot dry winds, originating in the desert southwest, occasionally reach Iowa in the summer, producing unusually high temperatures. Autumns are generally mild and pleasant.
