Kearney
is located in south-central Nebraska in Buffalo County. It is the principal city of the Micropolitan area that consists of Buffalo and Kearney counties. The city, which is pronounced "Kar-ney" has a population of 30,129 and is one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Nebraska. It is home to the campus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, which has a student population of about 7,000. The city is also home to the Tri-City Storm, a USHL team. The team plays their games at the FirsTier Events Center, a large arena with seating for 5,000. The arena also attracts various big name performers, such as Jeff Foxworthy, the Harlem Globetrotters and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. The Museum of Nebraska Art, which is the state's official art collection, is located here, along with five golf courses, twelve city parks and fine dining and shopping. Fort Kearny, one of the early U.S. Army posts, is now a 40-acre state park located six miles southeast of the city and the Cottonmill Lake Recreation Area offers 98 acres of land and 30 acres of water. The Great Platte River Road Archway Museum, which spans Interstate 80, is a museum that pays tribute to the area's first pioneers and, just west of Kearney, is a subdivision called The 1,733 Estates, which marks the exact halfway point between Boston and San Francisco.

Southern Nebraska has an unpredictable four-season climate. Since it lies near the middle of the continent, it experiences the extremes of temperature characteristic of a continental climate. Usually, this type of climate is described as hot summers and cold winters. However, in central Nebraska, it is common to experience spells that are warmer or colder, wetter or drier than expected. Winters can be extremely frigid when cold air masses move through the area and lower temperatures rapidly. It's not unusual to see a decline of fifty degrees in a twelve-hour period in late winter when warming of the land is interrupted by airflow from the frigid land to the north. A severe blizzard in central Nebraska will occur about once every thirty years.
