Hastings
is located in the agricultural heartland of south-central Nebraska. It serves as the county seat for Adams County and has a population of approximately 24,000. Home to Hastings College, the city is also known for being the place where Kool-Aid was invented by Edwin Perkins in 1927. The town celebrates with Kool-Aid Days every year the second weekend of August. Hastings is also home to Fisher Fountain, which is the largest water fountain between Chicago and Denver. It is located in Highland Park in Hastings and was considered a "sign of hope" for the town during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. The city of Hastings offers a busy downtown area with boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, retail stores and great restaurants. Other attractions include the Children's Museum of Central Nebraska, Hastings Museum of Natural & Cultural History and the Lied Super Screen Theater. This area is known for its birding opportunities along the Platte River and in the Rainwater Basin, where cranes and waterfowl stop on their annual migration. Three golf courses are located in Hastings, along with 18 city parks, a hiking and biking trail, miniature golf, a public go-kart track and a paved racing course.

South Central Nebraska has the most continental climate of any area in the United States. Winters are cold and summers warm. However, the weather might be more unpredictable than one would think. It's not unusual for temperatures to change rapidly within a short period of time. Seasonal weather variations can be drastic at times. As in many other areas of the Midwest, summer can bring severe thunderstorms, hailstorms and tornadoes. When not stormy, summer days are hot. Winters are cold and snowy. Spring and autumn are often the most pleasant times to visit. Sand storms, blizzards and windstorms often hit the area. These natural hazards are a normal part of the climate of Nebraska. The amount of precipitation in the state gradually decreases as one travels from the Great Plains to the Rockies.
