Columbus
is a city of about 21,000, located in Platte County, 80 miles west of Omaha on the Loup River. For those who enjoy Old West history, Columbus is home to the oldest tavern in the west (Glur's Tavern,) which was frequented by Buffalo Bill Cody when he would visit the area. Today, Columbus is a family-friendly town that boasts it is "a place where the air is still fresh and manners still count." The town is also home to several attractions, including a water park, several golf courses, historic attractions and a race track. As part of the Lewis and Clarke Region of northeast Nebraska, Columbus offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun and adventure. One example is the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, located in Royal, Nebraska. This unique park contains the fossil skeletons of animals that died at a watering hole following a massive volcanic eruption some twelve million years ago. The fossil bed has been uncovered and left in place for public viewing. The site was declared a National Natural Landmark in 2006 and contains a visitor center, exhibits and trails. It is open Memorial Day Weekend-Labor Day, Monday - Saturday. Columbus, Nebraska is a refreshing place to visit - a city with small town values combined with big city amenities.

Columbus Weather & Climate
Central Nebraska has an unpredictable four-season climate. Since it lies near the middle of the continent, it experiences the extremes of temperature characteristic of a continental climate. Usually, this type of climate is described as hot summers and cold winters. However, in central Nebraska, it is common to experience spells that are warmer or colder, wetter or drier than expected. Winters can be extremely frigid when cold air masses move through the area and lower temperatures rapidly. It's not unusual to see a decline of fifty degrees in a twelve-hour period in late winter when warming of the land is interrupted by airflow from the frigid land to the north. A severe blizzard in central Nebraska will occur about once every thirty years.
