Wymore
is a small town in southeastern Nebraska with a population of approximately 1,600 residents. It is served by U.S. Highway 77 and is 52 miles south of Lincoln and 114 miles southeast of Omaha. The village of Wymore was founded in 1881 as a railroad town. It lies in the fertile valley and gently rolling hills of the Big Blue River. The basic economic activities consist of farming, retail sales and small manufacturing - Wymore is mostly considered to be a "bedroom community." It is called the Welsh Capital of the Great Plains due to its many generations of immigrants from Wales who settled in the area. The Welsh continued their day-to-day life in Wymore by founding a Welsh-language church, school and cemetery, as well as preserving the Welsh traditions of music, dance and poetry. The town is home to the Wymore Welsh Heritage Centre, which includes the Welsh Language library (catalogued in English as well as Welsh), oral and written histories of early settlers and artifacts of Welsh life in the Great Plains. Other attractions in Wymore include the Pleasantview Schoolhouse, a fully restored 1900s era schoolhouse and museum, and several city parks that offer picnicking, playground equipment and other recreation.

Southeastern Nebraska has a four-season climate with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures vary only slightly from place to place in Nebraska, although the far west is cooler than the rest of the state. Winters in Southeast Nebraska can be extremely cold. Precipitation in this part of Nebraska averages 24 to 28 inches per year. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. On June 22, 2003, the largest hailstone ever measured fell in southeast Nebraska, in the city of Aurora. It measured 7 inches in diameter and had a circumference of 18.75 inches. Snowfall in southeast Nebraska averages 17 inches. Blizzards, droughts, tornadoes and windstorms are possible and have plagued Nebraskans throughout history.
