Valentine
is a small town in Cherry County, Nebraska, located in the north central part of the state. Valentine was named "one of United States best wilderness towns" in the September, 2007 issue of National Geographic Adventure Magazine, in the article titled "50 Best Places to Live and Play." Valentine lies immediately north of the Niobrara River, on the northern edge of the Sandhills physiographic region. Merritt Reservoir, which was created by a dam on the Snake River, is located about 30 miles southwest of Valentine. Snake Falls, the largest falls in Nebraska, is located on the Snake River between the reservoir and the town of Valentine. Smith Falls State Park is about 15 miles east of Valentine. Inside the park, you will find the beautiful Smith Falls, which, at 63 feet tall, is the highest waterfall in the state. Smith Falls State Park is adjacent to the Niobrara National Scenic River and in 1996, a footbridge was built across the Niobrara River to provide convenient public access to the park. The falls are on a short spring-fed stream that plunges into a small canyon on the south side of the Niobrara River. The canyon is narrow and sheltered from direct sunlight, and is much cooler than the surrounding landscape. This allows for a unique set of flora to grow that is atypical for the Sand Hills region. Valentine is a great place to stay while exploring the area and offers shopping, restaurants, and all sorts of lodging, from camping and cabins to traditional hotels.

Northeast Nebraska has a continental climate that experiences extremes of heat and cold annually. Typically, temperatures in this region exceed 100 °F (38 °C) for a few summer days and drops below zero for a few nights each winter. Summer temperatures average around 90 °F (32 °C) with lows near 60 °F (16 °C). In the wintertime, highs are typically around freezing, with lows in the single digits. The northeast is the coldest area of the state and outbreaks of Arctic air can bring frigid conditions with snow and strong winds. Blowing and drifting snow can be a problem in the winter. A severe blizzard of extended duration occurs in northeast Nebraska about once every thirty years. Nebraska has wide ranges of precipitation from year to year and rainfall decreases steadily as you travel east to west in the state.
