Ogallala
is a small town of about 5,000 located in southwestern Nebraska. Once a stop on the Pony Express and later along the transcontinental railroad, Ogallala was designated Nebraskas Cowboy Capital by the Nebraska State Historical Society. Ogallalas first cemetery, Boot Hill, is now an historic park and for more than 100 years, the town has ranked among Nebraska's top tourist spots. The town is well known for Front Street, a western attraction designed to replicate the Trail Drive era. In the summertime, family shows are presented each night at the Crystal Palace Revue, which is Nebraska's longest running summer theater. Other attractions on Front Street include a western museum, specialty shops and museums and a restaurant that serves real buffalo burgers and steaks. Ogallala is also near Lake McConaughy, called "Nebraska's Western Oasis." Lake McConaughy boasts 100 miles of beautiful shoreline and 30,000 surface acres of water. Activities at the lake include swimming, boating, and some of the best walleye fishing in the country. You'll also find boat rentals at the lake, along with grocery stores, restaurants, jet-ski rentals and campgrounds. The area is also home to two golf courses. A popular event at Lake McConaughy is the annual Kites and Castles, which draws competitors and visitors from several states.

South Central Nebraska is located near the center of North America, far from large bodies of water or mountains. As such, it has a humid, continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Temperatures vary slightly around the state, although the far west is a few degrees cooler in the summertime than the rest of the state. Thunderstorms can occur in the spring and summer, and precipitation does decrease steadily from east to west. The average date of the last frost in this area is May 12th and the average date of the first frost is September 28th. In winter, temperatures of zero or below occur approximately 15 times during the winter. Outbreaks of cold Arctic air bring frigid conditions about five times each season. Snow with strong winds, causing blowing and drifting, occur several times each winter, with a severe blizzard of extended duration occurring about once every thirty years.
