North-Platte
is the county seat for Lincoln County, Nebraska, located in the southwestern part of the state. It lies along Interstate 80 at the confluence of the North and South Platte Rivers where they form the Platte River. The estimated population of the town is 24,386. North Platte is a railroad town, home to the world's largest rail yard - Bailey Yard. During World War II, the city was famous for the North Platte Canteen. Here, tens of thousands of volunteers from North Platte and surrounding towns met the troop trains passing through the town and offered them coffee, sandwiches and support. Today, the Golden Spike Tower & Visitor Center is an eight-story tower that overlooks Bailey Yard. Other attractions in North Platte include the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, which is a living history park about Buffalo Bill Cody. Also, the Lincoln County Historical Museum, the North Platte Area Children's Museum, and Cody Park Wild West Memorial and Railroad Museum. North Platte offers a charming downtown area of cobblestone streets with various specialty shops and restaurants. There are four public golf courses in the area and also opportunities for hiking, biking and other outdoor sports.

Central Nebraska's weather is unpredictable. It is classified as an extreme continental four-season climate. Cold fronts penetrate the region in winter and may lower temperatures rapidly. Declines of fifty degrees Fahrenheit in a twelve-hour period have occurred in late winter when warming of the land is interrupted by airflow from the frigid land to the north. Typical winter temperatures will include several days with temperatures dropping below zero (F). However, temperatures even in mid-winter can rise above sixty degrees. Summers can be just as unpredictable. Mid-summer temperatures in central Nebraska generally range in the 60s to 70s. However, hot mid-summer temperatures may be very persistent in some years, lasting for several weeks.
