Gering
is a town of approximately 7,750 located in Scotts Bluff County in the west-central Panhandle region of Nebraska. Founded in 1887, the town of Gering sits at the base of a bluff that is now a national park called Scotts Bluff National Monument. The city of Scottsbluff sits directly across the North Platte River from Gering. Together, the two cities form the 7th largest urban area in Nebraska. Gering is well known for its annual Oregon Trail Days celebration, which takes place the second week of July each year. This festival features an International Food Fair in downtown Gering, a parade, a chili-cook-off, community barbecue, and concerts at the Five Rocks Amphitheater. Scotts Bluff National Monument was named for the bluff that has been a landmark of the Great Plains for hundreds of years. Today, the park contains 3,000 acres of prairie land and scenic sandstone bluffs. Parts of the old trail used by early settlers can still be seen and the Oregon Trail Museum features a variety of exhibits of the early pioneers. A paved road and hiking trail in the park allow visitors to either drive or walk to the summit of the bluff, which offers a spectacular view of the North Platte Valley. Other attractions in or near Gering include the North Platte Valley Museum, the Farm and Ranch Museum and Annual Harvest Festival and the Wyo-Braska Natural History Museum.

The west central panhandle region of Nebraska, in the North Platte Valley region, has a four-season climate of cold winters and hot, dry summers. High temperatures in the summer range in the 80¢s and 90¢s, with occasional temperatures of 100 or slightly above, but with very low humidity. Lows of around 60 are common during the summer. Thunderstorms can occur in the spring and summer. The average date of the last frost in this area is May 12th and the average date of the first frost is September 28th. In winter, temperatures of zero or below occur approximately 15 times during the winter. Outbreaks of Arctic air bring very cold conditions about five times each season. Snow with strong winds, causing blowing and drifting, occur several times each winter, with a severe blizzard of extended duration occurring about once every thirty years.
