Chadron
is a small city in Dawes County, Nebraska in the northwest Panhandle Region of the state. It is situated at the junction of Highways 20 and 385, about 100 miles south of Rapid City. Chadron is known for its Old West history and unique natural beauty. The town is host to a popular annual celebration called "Fur Trading Days," which is in honor of its origins as a fur trading post in the Great Plains during the 1800s. Chadrons Museum of the Fur Trade is the largest museum of its kind in the United States, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Chadron is also home to the Dawes County Historical Museum and Eleanor Barbour Cook Museum of Geology. Chadron State Park, Nebraskas oldest state park, was established in 1921 and is called "the best kept secret of the state park system." It's nestled in the Pine Ridge area and offers a campground, swimming pool, trails for hiking and more. Other places of interest include the Agate Fossil Beds National Park and Toadstool Park, which is noted for unusual geologic formations and valuable fossil deposits. For a different view of the area, Chadron also offers a dinner train that travels through the scenic Bordeaux Region of the Pine Ridge area.

Chadron Weather & Climate
Northwest Nebraska has a continental, four-season climate with cold winters and warm summers. Nebraska often experiences sudden changes in weather, so the best description of the climate is unpredictable. The state lies in a zone where rainfall diminishes rather quickly as you travel westward. Across the state the average annual precipitation declines about one inch for each twenty-two miles. Therefore, the northwest is the driest region in the state, while the southeast is the wettest. In winter, very cold air masses may occasionally move through the area and lower temperatures rapidly. Snowstorms in Nebraska are common through March. April is the transition month with it not unusual to see snow on the ground or none at all. On average the last spring freeze is mid April and the last frost is mid May. Severe weather in Nebraska can include tornadoes, blizzards and drought.
