Alliance
is located in Box Butte County in the center of the Nebraska Panhandle. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,959. Alliance is bordered on the south and east by the Sandhills Prairie and is billed as "An Oasis in the Sandhills." A historic town that began in 1888 and grew into a leading railroad and business center, Alliance is in the center of one of the most productive cattle raising areas in the United States. The town is home to "Carhenge," which is a replica of England's ancient Stonehenge, that is constructed completely with automobiles. Carhenge, which was created by artist Jim Reinders, is made from vintage American cars. Thirty-eight automobiles were used to make Carhenge, which measures approximately 96 feet in diameter. Admission is free to view it, although donations are welcomed. The town of Alliance lies amidst one of the largest sand hill grasslands regions in the world. Other nearby attractions include the Lewis and Clark Trail, the Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail and the Pony Express route. One of the worlds richest fossil beds is located at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument near Alliance.

West Central Nebraska has a continental, four-season climate of cold winters and hot, dry summers. Temperatures vary slightly around the state, although the far west is a few degrees cooler in the summertime than the rest of the state. Thunderstorms can occur in the spring and summer, but precipitation does decrease steadily from east to west. The average date of the last frost in this area is May 12th and the average date of the first frost is September 28th. In winter, temperatures of zero or below occur approximately 15 times during the winter. Outbreaks of Arctic air bring very cold conditions about five times each season. Snow with strong winds, causing blowing and drifting, occur several times each winter, with a severe blizzard of extended duration occurring about once every thirty years.
